How To Set Up Stratocaster

How to set up a Strat: 4 essential tips

(Prototype credit: Time to come / Phil Barker)

one. Setting A Vibrato Unit of measurement

"When you're setting upwardly the trem [aka vibrato unit], I would get your electrical guitar into tune first and so tighten the screws [of the adjustable claw inside the crenel on the rear of the guitar that adjusts spring tension] until the underside of the span is just resting against the body - so you tin touch the arm and information technology volition motion hands," Matt explains.

"And then you keep methodically loosening the screws, adjusting them nigh a quarter- or a one-half-turn each time, both by the same amount - and retune your guitar after each adjustment.

"Keep doing that until the tremolo is in the position you want it to exist in. Doing it in pocket-size adjustments is the key if yous don't want to go lost in an endless loop of adjusting and retuning.

"Some other tip is to proceed a running tally – on a piece of newspaper or on your phone – of how much you've adjusted the strings, then you lot tin can e'er accept things back to where you started if you want to begin again."

ii. A Quick, Constructive Way To Set Pickup Peak

"The way I do it, and the mode I recommend everybody should exercise it, is to outset with the neck pickup," Matt says. "Heighten that upwardly until you tin start hearing what I call 'wolf tones.'

"They happen when the pickup'due south magnetic field starts interfering with the vibration of the strings. So either you'll hear this wobble in the note or it will take no sustain - information technology will literally just sort of end and your intonation will be all over the place. So notice where that is and then drop the pickup just below until that goes away.

"That is the highest you could have that pickup. You could take it lower if you lot wanted. Depending on your gear setup and your sense of taste, you lot might discover that you prefer the sound of it a little scrap lower, where it'south not putting so much signal out, letting the pickups 'exhale' a little flake more.

"Moving on to the other 2 pickups, you'll want to set them to produce around the same volume as the neck pickup for balance. Typically, the center one volition need to be a niggling bit higher than the neck ane, and the bridge 1 volition demand to exist a bit college still.

"The reason for that is the string doesn't vibrate equally much at the bridge equally it does at the neck, so all things existence equal it needs to be closer to the string to generate the same output. And because the string has less liberty to vibrate and move close to the span, you tin take the pickup closer to the strings earlier the pickup'south magnetic field starts affecting them adversely."

3. Setting Cord Acme

"Typically, the way I set the action - bold a good all-round medium activeness is required - is to [conform the saddle heights so the] top E string is virtually one.5mm above the 12th fret," says Matt. "And so you desire to come gradually upwards with each string until the bass strings are gear up at well-nigh 2mm, so you've got this slight rake going on.

"And I find that more comfortable: it ways that the strings can exhale properly and vibrate and that you can striking the bass side a footling scrap harder without them rattling, that kind of affair. Y'all don't actually desire to go on them all at the same superlative across the radius: they need to be at dissimilar heights to be at their optimum.

"If you've got a guitar with a small, vintage-style radius, withal, you might want to have the treble side a scrap higher than that. That'due south the but fourth dimension when I'd mayhap go for effectually 2mm across the board. That's simply then you tin can curve the higher strings without them choking out."

four. Cord Tree & Suspension Bending

"I've never liked the string to have to angle down from the tuning post to the string tree and and then bending back up to the nut," Matt says. "It goes back to that whole friction thing: you're adding another point of potential high friction there. And so I typically put more winds [spooling from tiptop to bottom] on the E and the B strings than on the G cord. That way, the string will go downwardly from the nut to the string tree but and so it volition usually end up being roughly level from the string tree to the post."
